Behind Closed Doors...
The Ordinary, The Mundane, The Overlooked!

The content of this work focuses on the documentation of a large family’s chaotic, yet typical life as seen through the lens of Carmen’s camera. Being part of the family herself, her intimate documentation of her most familiar environment seeks to create work which operates in the gap between life and art. Her photographs do not exist as isolated materials in aid of pre-painting research – they are rather a conjunctive part of an activity of capturing personal moments, as the paintings act as extended reflections on them. Carmen juxtaposes thickly layered paint and loosely washed areas creating semi-abstract paintings as different visual elements can be seen on her canvases. Her video and sound work are windows created by her, allowing the viewers to get a glimpse of what goes on –“behind closed doors”.

Artist’s Reflection on Work during Coronavirus Pandemic:
Living and creating in a historic time of an entire world dealing with a pandemic, Carmen’s attention on family life gives her work a meaning deeper than her personal connection to her subjects. Attached to the present phenomenon, her work is more than her own experiences – it is also connected to collective feelings of anxiety and fear; but also, that of re-evaluating what we take for granted. As Nan Goldin said of her own work, ‘you could never lose anyone if you photograph them enough’. Carmen solidifies the emotional life attached to her family life through the process of photographic, sound and painterly documentation. The time she spends at home with her loved ones, either by choice or enforced by law, provides a series of work with a strong quality of honesty and truthfulness about her feelings of attachment to safety, to the familiar, in a time of global change and fear of the unknown.
