‘I kept the first for another day’

I grew up on the edge of The Burren in County Clare, dreaming that one day I
might become a painter, but as way leads on to way, I got diverted and found
myself on another road, doubting if I should ever come back. But the dream
never died and when again two roads diverged before me, I did not hesitate: this time I took the one less travelled by.

Looking back, some of the ways were smooth, some were rough but I’m glad I
travelled both, for there I found the mythologies I keep returning to in my
painting. In my current work two contrasting themes dominate: the interplay of
art and conflict in the story of Ireland, and the ever-changing beauty of the
landscape that surrounds me here in Ireland’s ‘Valley of the Kings’.

John is based in Co. Meath and works mainly in acrylics and oils on a wide variety of themes from history to portraits and from landscapes to contemporary subjects. He also works as a sculptor in plaster and bronze.
