Riddle Me This P.9

2020
Oil on canvas
90 x 120cm
€850

These series of paintings represent the physical manifestation of  being in the day to day of urban and rural life and how modernity effects and exploits our surroundings.

The paintings aims  to capture a state of being that could be seen as a depiction of a decadent, narcissistic declining civilisation, shown by both use of classical and contemporary artworks cracking through the fabric of compositional surface of time interlocking and interfering with lonely streets and countryside scenes.

The paintings have also skewed and abandoned many contemporary and classical approaches to image composition and image making, One such example is the use of colour value beside colour tones.

This creates a multiple interference effect on top of an already chaotic and distorted surface of cracks and interruptions, next to colour tone the very dark cold black spots next to warmer colour value spots.

German expressionism is a major component of inspiration for the artwork artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and his use of colour also seen in Erich Heckel’s paintings.

Inspired by artists of old such as Caravaggio and Goya there use of darks and contrasting colours and their approaches and use of spotlight composition.

Inspiration from contemporary artists such as Ryan Hewett, Matthew Stone and Jenny Saville all three of these artists inspire with the way each one depicts the human being, body and figure and the way their artwork seems to fit into modernity.

I named my paintings “Riddle Me This” in reference to puzzles where they are solved by having an awareness to one’s surroundings.

The Images I paint are things I see on a day to day basis. I see tall buildings, long stretching roads, vast expanses of untouched countryside, harbours filled with boats, empty derelict houses and buildings, old imposing architecture, bright L.E.D. artificial lights, signposts, even the occasional cracks and patterns of a floor.

I want people to see the world through my eyes to gather an understanding of modernity s impact on the world around us from rural to urban Ireland the characteristics, the charms, the expanses that make up these areas and space’s.

My paintings are highly detailed and strategically arranged around the space that is the canvas or surface I have decided to depict my day to day life on, the paintings are not easy to read nor are they easy to navigate they are a maze requiring the viewer to become comfortable with getting there focus interrupted and diverted in order to look into the spaces between the positive and negative shapes.

I am also inspired by Film Noire and it’s use of scene lighting and image composition, I am also inspired by contemporary artists such as Ryan Hewett’s paintings of the figure and his use of colour and abstracted form and use of intersecting lines.
